Legacy of Rescue: A Daughter's Tribute is an intergenerational memoir of Marta's father and the Hungarian Commanding Officer who saved him and over 100 other Hungarian Jewish men in a forced labor battalion. Due to the testimony of Marta's father, Zoltán Kubinyi was posthumously honored as a Righteous Gentile.
The story of rescue came full circle in 2011 when Marta and her brother took their children back to Hungary to meet Kubinyi’s family including his teenage great grandchildren.
Marta wrote Legacy of Rescue: A Daughter's Tribute in honor of what would have been her father's 100th birthday. He passed away in 2000 at nearly 89 years of age, sharing boundless compassion and joy of life with all who knew him.
Marta once asked her father, "Why do you think you survived?" Without a moment's hesitation he answered, "So that I could have a daughter like you who would tell what happened." It has been an honor to do so, Dad.
With testimony and reflections by three generations of Marta's family, Legacy of Rescue has served as a catalyst for engaging discussions about historical events, family history, ethical decision making, and finding one's own courage in everyday life to do the right thing.

Legacy of Rescue: A Daughter's Tribute
WHAT PEOPLE SAY
"You may think you have read everything you ever wanted to hear about this era; but you will find this book will stir you to tears, and inspire you with courage.”
~ John F. Duge, Ph.D., M.D, retired Pastor, Adventist Church, SF
"Legacy of Rescue: A Daughter's Tribute is that rare big story that reaches across timelines, across countries and beyond one's individual family story and touches the human story. Legacy of Rescue brings history to life, making the political personal, and helping us all reflect on ourselves. It is a striking and compelling true story told by a gifted and chosen storyteller."
~ Jon Herzenberger, PsyD, Assistant Head, Drew School, San Francisco
"Legacy of Rescue, though it centers on painful events, is finally a greatly uplifting book about the nobility to which human beings can rise in catastrophic moments. Both men, survivor and rescuer,
stand as examples to us of the love we are capable of in the midst of horror and destruction. The book is written with deep authenticity and in exquisite prose."
~ Anita Barrows, PhD, Clinical Psychologist, tenured professor, Wright Institute, Berkeley
"As survivors, perpetrators, and witnesses of the Holocaust pass into history, Marta Fuchs’ Legacy of Rescue: A Daughter's Tribute stands as a moving memorial to her parents, the extraordinary man who saved her father's life, and a farewell to a remarkable generation. It instills a battered yet resilient hope in the reader and a renewed belief in essential
human goodness." ~ Armand Volkas, MFT, RDT, BCT, Healing the Wounds of History Institute
"Marta read passages from Legacy of Rescue at a book signing I attended in Chapel Hill, NC. Her love and respect for her father came through loud and clear as did her gratitude for the remarkable man who saved his life. This story about the best of two very different religions, bravery, family, and love is a tonic for the cynicism
we face day to day."
~ Shelley Fields, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Chapel Hill, NC
"Like so many members of the Second Generation, Marta Fuchs grew up with a family fractured by the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, its members scattered throughout the world. In her family of Hungarian Jews, the living members emigrated at different times: before and after the second World War; after the Hungarian Uprising of 1956. The dead lived on in stories and one of the most compelling was that of Zoltan Kubinyi. In this memoir, Marta Fuchs weaves his story and many others into her own search to document, commemorate and integrate the past and draw a portrait of a Righteous Christian in the Shoah."
~ Helen Epstein, author of Children of the Holocaust: Conversations with Sons and Daughters of Survivors and
Where She Came From: A Daughter's Search for her Mother's History.
"Marta Fuchs’ Legacy of Rescue: A Daughter's Tribute is an evocative, heart-stirring memoir, a captivating tour de force. A powerful yet tender narrative, the book provides a richly detailed account of how members of Marta's family were forced to endure suffering, loss, and hardship against the backdrop of a war-torn Hungary during the Holocaust. The book also describes Marta’s family's perilous escape to America against insurmountable odds. Legacy of Rescue is a moving story about selflessness—a triumph of the human spirit, where acts of heroism saved lives and, in turn, ensured the survival of future generations." ~ Professor and Author Martha Laham, Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill, CA
